This is the parts print (does not show how to put it together) I used an assembly guide for that and have checked it against the working Savage 6a. # 49, 47, 48, 69, 61, 63x2, 66, 67, 68, 51, 73, 38 / 56. All parts with a bearing surface were checked against known working parts, hardly any difference. For sale is my Savage Model 6A .22lr tube-fed rifle. This rifle does not have a serial number so it is difficult to determine exact age, but it appears to have been made in the early 1940's (pre WWII) through the basic research that I have done (checkered grips apparently mean pre war). I have fired the rifle and it functions flawelssly with the 100 or so rounds that I have put through it.
The Savage Model 6A is commonly referred to as the 'Gill Gun' due to the serrations on the side of the receiver. It will shoot .22 short, long, and long rifle. It can also function as a bolt action rifle by 'locking' the bolt in place. This allows the use of the shorts without causing malfunctions.

LSB#: 190110MS06

Make: Savage

Model: 6A

Serial Number: N/A

Year of Manufacture: 1949 (A Date Code)

Caliber: .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle, Long Rifle Only For Semi-Auto

Action Type: Tube Fed Semi-Auto Rifle or Bolt Action Rifle

Markings: The right side of the receiver is marked “SAFE”. The left side of the barrel is marked “.22 SHORT, LONG OR LONG RIFLE / LONG RIFLE ONLY AS AUTOMATIC” and has a date code to the right. The right side of the barrel is marked “2094577 PATENTS 2224758 / 2223093 RE 22585 2271576”. The top of the barrel is marked “SAVAGE” followed by “SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS, USA.” Followed by “MODEL 6 A” there is also an “x” mark on top of the barrel next to the receiver.

Value

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade sight, set into a dovetail. The rear sight is a dovetailed leaf sight with an elevator and a round notch.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stockis smooth stained wood. The LOP measures 13 ¾” from the front of the trigger to the back of the serrated hard rubber buttplate. The buttplate shows wear but no damage. The stock has scratches and knicks which are predominantly near the toe and general handling marks throughout. The piece has darkened nicely with age. It rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning on the barrel mainly on the top and also towards the muzzle. The trigger guard shows loss of finish as well. The left side of the frame has been poorly drilled and tapped for a scope mount that no longer exists, in addition to the factory holes. This does not affect anything but the appearance of the gun. The screw heads are lightly marred. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in Poor condition due to mechanics, see below.

Mechanics: The action DOES NOT function. The mag-tube is extremely difficult to seat and turn the last 2 or so inches as it is being inserted. When it is fully inserted, the action locks up. Tinkering is needed to get this to function. With the mag tube out, the action functions cleanly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements, and all firearms should be examined by a competent gunsmith before firing.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Savage 6A is a neat rifle that can be used as a bolt action or automatic, this is a fun little rifle ALMOST ready to chew through a few boxes of .22 (after you finish your tinkering of course). Once the mag tube is properly taken care of this will make a great plinking rifle, from the post-war glory days of American gun ownership, when every kid got a .22 for Christmas and no one ever worried about it! Please see our photos and good luck!
