HOW HE DOES IT
Let's start with the hardware. Here's a recent picture of the setup.
CONTROLLER
Lorin started with the M-Audio Trigger Finger for controlling Ableton. The Trigger Finger is a really simple controller with 16 buttons, 8 knobs and 4 upfaders. Bassnectar loves simplicity in both his production setup and his live setup - something he and ill.Gates both advocate.
The Trigger Finger was discontinued some years ago. Rather than switch to a more complex controller like the APC40, as many have done, Lorin got a controller custom built for him by 60Works. You can see the custom controller in the picture of his setup, it's the item with the blue buttons.
The custom controller is basically a small section of the Trigger Finger (with one more knob). It's got four columns, each column with four buttons (to fire cue points, loops or effects) and three knobs for each column. /u/sptgun found a blog post on this controller (thanks!). There have been some modifications since that post - the top plate is now silver, each knob has something (either a light or a button) beside it, and one of the knobs (top left, second from the left) is now (sometimes) green. My guess is the green knob is the tempo control knob.
MIXER
Lorin started with the Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixer. Here's a picture of that mixer from 2012. That mixer has four band EQs, which are nice - it gives you more control on the frequencies coming out of each channel by splitting the mid frequencies into two. It's also got some pretty sweet filters. But that's about it.
Recently, Lorin has switched over to the Pioneer DJM-900. That mixer has a full effects unit, a simpler filter, and a simpler layout - only three band EQ. Amusingly, Lorin doesn't use the effects unit at all. You can tell this because he covers up the enable effects button on the bottom right of the mixer - see the grey tape here, just beside his hand.
LAPTOP
Really simple here: his two laptops run Ableton and nothing else. They run in sync as safeguard against technical issues and also allows for him to transition easily between both laptops
ABLETON
The reason Bassnectar uses Ableton for his live performances now is because ill.Gates spent about a month working with him to make an Ableton DJ Template that works for him. ill.Gates has published this performance template and you can buy it for $40. Because of that, there's some videos on how the template works, and that gives some insight into how things work.
Basically, Lorin has a bunch of tracks organized already into sets of 4 things he can trigger. That might be loops, or the full track from a cue point, or just cue points. Some details on the ill.Gates intro of his template from 2011 here. He then loads the track into Ableton by searching for it and dragging it into clips within Ableton. From there, he can use the buttons on his controller to trigger them when he'd like.
For effects, there's a bunch of effects in that template. You can hear these in all of Bassnectar sets. Here's the point in the ill.Gates template video where he goes over all the effects.
OTHER ITEMS
Ill Gates Template Rarest Car
There's an easy one to address here: there's always two boxes stacked on top of each other and taped down. these have a bunch of cables coming out, and it's pretty simple what these are: audio interfaces. These are what the laptops are using to output audio to the mixer. There's one for each laptop.
Lorin's added some other items to his live setup recently. An iPad, one more controller, and a button (?).
The iPad is always tucked under his right laptop. The iPad probably just displays both of them so Lorin knows what's happening when. /u/roflcopter68 suggested that the iPad is running Traktor DJ, and by gollyhe's right. My guess is that this iPad with Traktor DJ has replaced the CDJ as a backup system.
Next up, the extra controller. My guess is that it's for lighting. Zoom in on it in this picture I see labels that say NT, Back Blast, and UV. The rest are hard to make out, but those sure seem like lighting labels. He's got some of the best lighting guys in the business working for him, but Lorin does love to control the experience, so he might have some way to work between them. He also has a computer that syncs all the lighting to the music (they called this the Ultimate Nerd Server. This might interface with that.
Lastly, the button. It looks so much like a button that I called it that. With the help of /u/HamSolcomb, though, we figured out that the button is not a button - it's the one-eared headphone that Lorin uses. Check it out, right side up, on this picture.. Thanks HamSolcomb!
SUMMARY
So to wrap up, here's how a mix between two tracks might go for Bassnectar:
- One track playing in Ableton
- Think of another track to play
- Go to laptop, search for track
- Drag and drop the track onto the clips
- On his controller, hit the top button, which is usually the intro loop - something simple, like a drum loop, or a part of the melody, that works well with the track already playing
- Perhaps add in improvised bits with vocals and stuff
- End the original track
Now, all that said, I think that's how his flow worked maybe 2-3 years ago. It seems to have gotten a bit more complicated. Check out the setup on the left laptop here. Clearly a lot more going on than just four clips and some effects. He must be moving around the scene in Ableton somehow.
