A round up of things people who failed their driver's license test hate hearing. “Was it an automatic fail?” Does it really matter at this point? “Don't worry, I didn't pass it my first time either.” Well that's great and all, but you have your license and I don't so.

The Formula One world champion, then 17, was given a major fault for nipping through a gap between two cars on a narrow road. But despite this early setback, driving instructor Roger Brunt hailed Button as 'the best pupil I have ever had'.

The 62 year-old from Trowbridge, Wiltshire said: 'He failed his test because he got into racing mode and nipped through a small gap on a notoriously narrow road without blinking an eyelid.

'The examiner didn't like it because it was too close to comfort, but Jenson took it on the chin that he had failed. He was annoyed with himself for what he did, but you have to accept defeat every now and again.'

Button had already been racing go-karts since the age of eight and had just five driving lessons before taking his first test.

Brunt, a lifelong friend of Button's father John, said the young racer bore all the hallmarks of brilliance. 'He knew exactly what it was all about from the word go and he handled the vehicle perfectly. It was his speed of mind that really impressed me: he was very quick with his thinking. That obviously helps when you're racing because you need to be able to make split second decisions.

'For Jenson, learning to drive on the road was just about getting used to being among traffic that was going a lot slower than he was used to. He did have a tendency to be a bit quick, but I told him to watch his speed and he did exactly what he was told.'

Button had one further lesson after failing his first test and passed the second time with flying colours.

The examiner who handed him his license, Dave Evans, said the young driver stood out immediately.

'Jenson was obviously vastly superior to most pupils because he knew how to make the machine do exactly what he wanted it to, which left him more time to concentrate on what was happening outside the car,' said the 67 year-old from Friary, Avon.

Both he and Mr Brunt follow the 29 year-old Button's career religiously and regularly discuss his successes on the phone.

'It was absolutely brilliant to watch him win,' said Mr Evans. 'He's a very sensible and conservative driver, just like Roger taught him, and he drove like a true world champion on Sunday.'
